Missing him

It's Tuesday afternoon. I returned to work Monday, then stopped in at home to see Nathaniel around lunch time. Today, I didn't get to go home.

I only saw the little guy for about an hour this morning ... one hour out of the past 17 or so since midnight last night. I'm going through withdrawal. What if he decides to start talking or rolling over or something? What if he has questions about sports? My wife and mother-in-law can't answer those questions for him.

What if I go home and find out his aunt dressed him in a sailor outfit? Last night I had to fight off her suggestion that he'd have such an outfit for Easter. I don't think themed outfits like that work (other than his Steelers outfit, of course). I'm figuring he'll just have some nice outfit that doesn't remind people of Popeye. That's my goal. Oh ... and he also have me around to help him find some hidden candy.

Rash
My only concern (and not a major one) is Nathaniel's diaper rash. At the hospital, we noticed he had very sensitive skin, so we just used gauze to wipe him off during changes. That's what the nurses had done, and he seemed fine. Then we ran out of gauze and switched to Pampers Sensitive Skin wipes (no alcohol; hypoallergenic; "gentler than a washcloth and water"). Within days, his butt was red and he was screaming.

We tried using wet paper towels for a few days (works pretty well), and now we've moved on to trying wet cotton balls (also works pretty well). We're frosting his bottom with diaper rash cream, and he's not screaming, but it is still very red.

Any advice out there for first-timers?

Triple Paste Diaper Rash Cream works wonders. Go to your pharmacy and ask the pharmacist--it's not on the regular store shelves. The sensitive skin wipes by Pampers work for my little boy. Good luck. Sharon

Mark: I use a creamed corn-based lotion of my own invention. It keeps my bottom shiny and smooth. But it might not work for your kid.

My son had a terrible rash that you said and we had his pediatrician check it out during a routine visit. Here is was a form of yeast (somewhat like a yeast infection) and required a prescription. The RX cleared his little butt in less then 2 days! Maybe you should mention it to his Dr. and see what they say. Also, we use a diaper rash cream called Bourdeux's Butt Paste...its a miracle worker! You can get it at any store like target or cvs...little pricey but worth it! Good luch!

What you use to clear up the rash depends on what is causing the rash. It is possible that it is a yeast infection in which case, you will need a prescription. However, if Nate has diarhea and that is what is causing the rash, try Mylanta. Yes, Mylanta. Diarhea contains acid and Mylanta breaks up acid. It helped alot with my son. Wipe it on with cotton or something soft. Also, allow him to be without a diaper for a while and let the skin breath.

I can appreciate that all these other parents are trying to help you by sharing their remedies, but this is your baby and his problems may be unique to him. In this day and age of miracle disposable diapers, a rash shouldn't be considered a normal part of being a baby. Before using the by guess and by golly method, please call your pediatrician. That's what he/she is there for. Little Nate deserves a professional opinion. Good luck and keep us posted!

You can tell it's a yeast infection if there are raised circles (my dr. called them satellites) and you do not need a prescription, just an antifungal cream. Also, I think the Buttpaste works great. I've also been using Bag Balm which is all natural and originally used for cow udders. Good Luck!

TRIPLE PASTE IS A LIFE SAVER!! I think I gave Amanda some at the shower. We also use Lotrimen AF (yes the foot cream) on LAuren. She would get a red bumpy rash when ever she took an antibiotic. We used it together with the triple paste. It cleared it up with in a day. Also let his bottom open to air for an hour a day. LAy him on a cloth diaper or waterproof pad in case he pees.

Can't wait to see him!!

I know a hockey player who swears by Boudreaux's Butt Paste, for both his 1-year-old and himself, but he is 32 years old and has been punched in the head hundreds of times. So take that for what it's worth.

The Huggies all natural wipes worked much better on my daughter than the Pampers version. My guess is that Huggies is a wetter version thus requiring less rubbing contact during the diaper change.
