Relatively tube free
After a long night last night (as mentioned before, Amanda and I are completely exhausted, and Amanda isn't feeling particularly well right now), we got great news today.
When I went to visit Nathaniel at 11 a.m., they already had removed the two tubes in his nose and down his throat along with the sensor measuring something from inside his heart. They told me they'd be taking the worst tube of all -- the big tube sucking blood from his chest cavity -- off in another 20 minutes.
So when I went back just a few minutes ago, he looked a lot like he looked when we first brought him in -- except he now has pink toes that are warm ... and a big scar on his chest. All things considered, however, we'll live with the scar.
He's still not taking many visitors because of infection concerns. And I'd imagine he's close to as exhausted as Amanda and me considering the physical battles his body has been through in the past week (he's one week old today!).

Happy One Week, Nathaniel! We've been thinking about the three of you all week, and we're so happy everything is turning out OK.
Mark & Amanda -
Now that the worst is over I hope you can both relax a bit. I am thinking of you all often!
P.S.
Mark, you're a good writer.
Jeez, Jake told me what's been going on and then Chad did the fact-check for me. And now I'm here and have read all your entries. I can only say that you three are amazing considering the tubes, long nights, and worry. Tell Amanda she rocks! And I'm sure "Nat" (I like Nat) will be rockin' too. How soon can he listen to some VU? I'll be reading and hope that soon I can come and visit and such. Meanwhile, I'll be thinking of you guys.

Yay! The three of you have been in our prayers all week, and I'm so glad to see that the surgery went well. Nate (there's my vote) sounds like a beautiful, beautiful baby and I can't wait to see him when you're all up for a visit.
Wonderful news that little Nathaniel is getting rid of tubes and coming round to being just baby!
We are all pulling for him and certainly have Amanda and Mark in our thoughts. Take courage - he is in the best of all hospitals. You will look back when he is a teenager and think - oh, this was not so bad - just kidding.
Enjoy him now, every minute - all the more special. GW
Mark, this is Amanda's cousin Jennifer in Seattle. You guys have been in our thoughts and prayers. We went through something similar this past Fall with our little girl. No surgery, but an unexpected heart condition and 3 weeks in the NICU. Hang in there. It gets better every day. Make sure Amanda is getting lots and lots of rest.
