Almost a full year

It's amazing ... Nathaniel will be 1 year old on Friday. A whole year. It really has gone by astonishingly fast, from the excruciating beginning to the awe-inspiring ups and downs since then.

We're having family over to help celebrate this weekend, which should be fun. Nathaniel, of course, has no idea anything is coming up. I just hope he can handle all the excitement of having a couple dozen people hanging around. Usually, when there are people around, he ends up refusing to sleep and barely being able to eat because he's so busy watching everything that's happening.

I guess we'll see how things go.

So now that's he about a year old, we're really starting to try to give him some more "adult" food. We're giving him small bits of some of the stuff we eat (mostly bits of bread, but he's also had some yogurt, potatoes and such). He's also eating some older baby jarred stuff. He went for the turkey and rice stage 3 jar, but he refused the chunkier chicken and vegetables (by "refused" I mean "threw up").

The stage 2 meats look amazingly appetizing on the label. The chicken and pears has this really tasty-looking grilled chicken. Then inside the jar is a bunch of mush. Where's the truth in advertising?

We had hoped to try to make food for Nathaniel. The one time Amanda worked for a while on making a big batch of chicken and potatoes along with some veggies, though, Nathaniel threw it up every time we tried (two or three times) and we ended up with quite a bit of mush that really wasn't all that appetizing.

This weekend, we gave him whole milk for the first time instead of formula ... and he seems to love it! He downs it all, while he'd been leaving some formula behind most of the time recently. It's very exciting to have to simply pour a glass of milk rather than mix up formula for him every time now.

We also went ahead and bought a little toothbrusher thing that fits over your finger and used it on him yesterday ... and while he looked scared of it at first, he didn't have much of a problem with it in the end. Pretty cool.

More to come in this week leading up to his birthday.

You can always try some canned vegetables or veggies out of soup that are softer, my daughter likes those. Or any vegetable that you overcook a bit is fine. Also, I recently cooked a chicken in the crockpot and my daughter really liked that, it gets softer and easier to eat that way. And pizza crust is safe, just watch when it starts to get mushy, switch to the other end. My baby is almost one also, so all of these foods are safe.

Happy Birthday to Nathaniel on Friday. My nephew was also born on Feb 2 (Groundhog Day). He will be 17 on Friday.

My daughter loved the yellow/orange fruits and vegetables when she started eating 'real' food - peaches, squash, carrots. You can also give him things like Cream of Wheat, or mashed baked potato or sweet potato with a litlte butter, soft things like that. The more natural the food is, the better.

I tried everything when my son started eating whole foods. I found that he did not like his elements mixed. So rather then spagetti he would eat a cut up meatball and then dry/cooked pasta seperatly. You also might want to try chicken nuggets. Same goes with sandwhich elements... he likes the bread seperate from the cheese. An absolute favortite is Nutrigran bars... sounds funny but they're soft and cookie like. And a great safe alternative from the real cookies are graham crackers. They're easy to hold and easy to chew.
